Belle Boyd and Jackson JD1

A marker about the Confederate spy Belle Boyd and General Stonewall Jackson was placed south of Front Royal by the Virginia Conservation and Development Commission in 1929.

 

A wayside marker giving more information about the meeting is a short distance away on a side street.

 

Location and description

The marker is south of Front Royal on the east side of the Stonewall Jackson Highway (U.S. 340) at Skyline Caverns. The marker is between the legs of the tall Skyline Caverns entrance sign.

Belle Boyd and Jackson

Near here Stonewall Jackson
was met by the spy Belle Boyd
and informed of the position
of the Union troops at Front
Royal, May 23, 2862. Jackson
was advancing northward at-
tempting to get between Banks'
Army and Winchester.
